More engineers needed in research

Thanks to Careers Consultant Sharon Maguire for this article highlighting a need for more engineers to be involved in research

There was an interesting article on The Guardian’s Higher Education Network saying that there is a need for more engineers in research. A 2015 report on the pathways of engineering graduates showed that in 2012 only 3.2% engineering graduates went on to further study or research. The author of the article suggests that we’re doing a lot to encourage and inform potential and current students about the opportunities in industry, for example by advertising industry internships or placements to engineering undergraduates. But we are failing to give engineering students enough opportunities to experience research placements during their degree so they can consider further study and academic research as an option when they graduate.
